Occupational Therapy Month 2022

Have you ever been to Occupational Therapy? Occupational therapists play a vital role in helping people recover by treating injured and disabled patients through the therapeutic use of everyday activities. Every year during the month of April, the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) likes to celebrate occupational therapists for making a meaningful difference in the lives of their patients. This month is meant to acknowledge all the great work occupational therapists have done and spread awareness about the importance of the occupational therapy profession.

Occupational therapy dates back all the way to 100 B.C. Although it did not have a name at the time, Greek physicians used to give massages, exercises, baths, and music to heal stress and to soothe a patient’s mental or emotional disorder. Then during the 1800s, the benefits of occupational therapy were becoming more acknowledged and understood. However, it wasn’t until 1915 when the first educational program began for people who wanted to study and become an occupational therapist. Next in 1921, occupational therapy became an official profession. Now occupational therapy has become a rewarding career and is recognized as one of the best jobs out there.Hel

Unlike physical therapy, which focuses on improving movement, mobility, and function. Occupational therapy focuses on helping a person perform daily tasks better. Some examples of everyday activities include: getting dressed, organizing a purse or a backpack, holding a pen or pencil, writing, as well as throwing and catching. This can result in some miraculous achievements as clients take small steps to achieving what they want to do. Overall, occupational therapy has been making some advancements in the health care profession by reducing hospital readmissions and helping people lead a normal life.

Occupational therapy has been helping patients around the world for over 100 years. It is important not only to honor occupational therapists but also to educate yourself and acknowledge all the good work occupational therapy has done. Take to social media to share information about occupational therapy with your colleagues and remember to use the hashtag #OTMonth!
