Occupational Therapy Activities You Can Do at Home

Occupational Therapy (OT) is a specialized type of rehabilitation that focuses on helping patients get the most out of life through practicing everyday activities. The goal of OT is to allow the patient to have maximum independence. When you first go to see your Occupational Therapist, they will evaluate you and assess where you can benefit from Occupational Therapy. Once they have evaluated you, they will start to work with you and even give you things you can do at home to help. Below are some activities your Occupational Therapist might suggest for you to do at home:

Yoga

Yoga has a lot of benefits, and one of them is giving you the flexibility you need to get moving again. All you need is our comfortable CanDo® Yoga Mat and enough space to stretch out. You can start by trying gentle yoga poses to get your muscles stretched and loose. Our yoga mat is thin and lightweight enough to take with you anywhere but also has extra padding for when you plan on using it for extended periods of time. Yoga is a great way to help improve balance, flexibility, muscle tone, focus, and concentration.

Coloring

For kids, Occupational Therapists will find fun ways to make their activities interesting. One activity that is great for a child’s hand-eye coordination skills is coloring. Coloring gives a child joy and gives them the opportunity to practice holding writing instruments. This activity allows them to strengthen their muscles and practice their fine motor skills while having fun at the same time!

Occupational Therapy - Ball Squeeze

Ball Squeeze

Both relaxing and therapeutic, squeezing a ball can have a lot of benefits. The CanDo® Digi-Squeeze® hand exerciser is a hand-held foam exercise ball for squeezing that helps develop isolated finger strength, flexibility, and coordination. Whenever you are stuck in thought or have a stressful moment, you can easily pull out this handy ball to help you strengthen your hand muscles and relieve stress. You can do a variety of different squeezing techniques to allow you to be able to grip again.

If you think you or someone you know could benefit from Occupational Therapy, it is good to find a therapist that can help satisfy your need to be a better you. Practicing activities at home along with what you are doing in the Occupational Therapist’s office will give you greater independence in your everyday life.
