How to Clean Your Yoga Mat

Have you thought about cleaning your yoga mat? The truth is, with frequent usage, your yoga mat can quickly accumulate all your sweat, skin oils, dirt and grime. Between yoga classes and core workouts, your yoga mat might be harboring a lot of germs and bacteria. Thankfully, there are ways to properly clean your yoga mat.

If you never knew how to properly wash your yoga mat or you just noticed it started to stink, then you are going to want to give it a deep clean. The best way to really eliminate dirt and grim off your mat is to give it a bath. But this isn’t a typical bath that regular humans have. You are going to want to fully submerge your yoga mat and add a tablespoon of dish soap or detergent for each gallon of water you use. Let your yoga mat take a nice soak for about 10 minutes before rinsing it off with clean water. You will then want to gently wipe it down with a cloth before placing your yoga mat on the drying rack. Doing this allows it the mat to fully dry overnight. We recommend that you do this at least once a month depending on how much you use your yoga mat.

In combination with deep cleaning your yoga mat, you are going to want to clean it everyday after use. You can either use a store-bought disinfecting wipe or make your own cleaning solution at home. Simply mix white vinegar with tap water into a spray bottle at a 1-to-4 ratio. Then shake the spray bottle to combine your mixture to make your cleaning solution. Spray your new homemade cleaning solution onto your yoga mat and gently wipe it down with a cloth or paper towel. You might want to let it dry on a drying rack overnight to make sure it is fully dried off before you use it again. If you really want to use a washing machine to make things easier on yourself, make sure your yoga mat is machine washable. However, we don’t recommend this because your yoga mat still has the potential to get damaged or fall apart.

It is worth your time to properly clean your yoga mat. It can get dirty easily after multiple uses and no one wants to workout on a dirty mat. By following these tips, you will have the cleanest yoga mat in no time.
